METHODOLOGY
All the brook trout recorded in this report were angled by fly fishermen using barbless hooks (artificial flies tied on hooks with the barbs pinched down flat). The trout were captured, placed in a holding container, measured, weighed and tagged on the right gill plate using a small, numbered monel tag. They were released immediately following the recording of these data. Tagging, which has proven to have no detrimental effect on trout, allows for the charting of fish migration and growth data as well as establishing that the same fish are not being caught repeatedly. Two experienced technicians working together can weigh, measure, tag and accurately record the data from a brook trout in less than a minute with the fish being out of water for less than 15 seconds on two separate occasions during the process.
Trout were measured (fork length) in the Baird & Corbett designed measuring tubes which give a fast and accurate measurement without causing any undue stress on the fish. Trout were weighed with Pesola scales having weight capacities of 0 - 600 grams and 0 - 2500 grams.
As brook trout under 18.0 cm in length usually have a very thin and fragile gill plate, they are not tagged. These fish are in their second year of life and this period of rapid growth renders them marginal tag candidates. However, once a brook trout reaches two years old, the gill plate thickens and toughens and tagged trout have been known to supply valuable data for as long as three consecutive years.
Tagging took place at Peskowesk Brook, Eel Weir, Mill Falls, Rogers Brook and the Little River System.
Please note that average as used through out this report is arithmetic mean.
PESKOWESK LAKE WATERSHED
A total of 137 brook trout were tagged on the Peskowesk Lake Watershed in the spring of 2016. These trout were all tagged in the section of brook from the foot of Peskowesk Lake to the pool immediately below the Peskowesk Brook bridge.
There were also 29 recaptures recorded with 27 being same year recaptures. This 19.7% return of same year tagged fish allowed for the collection of more interesting growth data. (See Brook Trout Recaptures 2016 elsewhere in this report for further details).
The average length of the tagged trout was 22.9 cm (18.0 cm - 33.0 cm) and the average weight was 190 grams (80 - 500).
CPUE was 1.95 (0.0 - 4.0).
Light gill and fin lice infestations were noted in a number of the larger trout at Peskowesk Brook.
.
EEL WEIR
Data was collected from a total of 22 brook trout at the Eel Weir in the spring of 2016. The average length of the 22 trout was 23.6 cm (21.0cm - 33cm) and the average weight was 203 grams (100 gr - 410 gr). Of the total 22 trout, 19 were tagged and three were recaptures. (See 2016 recapture information elsewhere in this report). CPUE not available.
LITTLE RIVER SYSTEM
A total of 60 brook trout were tagged by the research team on the Little River System in the spring of 2016. The average length of the 60 trout was 23.0 cm. (18.0cm - 35.0 cm) and the average weight was 157 grams (50gr - 480 gr). CPUE not available.

October 12, 2016 Water temperature 7.6C and water level 15cm above the bank. Ray and I caught 26 brook trout and tagged 13 at Rogers Brook.
October 17, 2016 Water temperature 10.6C and level holding at Rogers Brook. Caught four small trout with only one large enough to tag.
November 3, 2016 Water temperature 8.2cm with the beaver dam holding the level the same at Rogers Brook. Ray and I caught seven brook trout, tagged three, largest a 27.6cm / 250 gram female.
We had the underwater camera in place in a couple of locations and saw two different trout.
November 17, 2016 Water temperature 10C and level holding at Rogers Brook. Ray and I caught three brook trout and tagged one.
Summary
A total of 63 brook trout were caught at Rogers Brook in the fall of 2016. 29 of these trout were gill tagged and one was a recapture. The average length of the tagged trout was 21.1 cm. (18.0 cm - 31.0 cm) and the average weight was 113 grams (50 gr. - 360 gr.).
The catch numbers were way down this fall at Rogers Brook. It appears the extremely low water conditions over summer could be a contributing factor, however, that remains to be seen.

Personal Observation: From close analysis of these and previous brook trout growth records, it would appear a growth in length precedes a gain in weight.
RELEVANT DATA REVIEW
Personal Observations Italicized
The average length of 106 brook trout recorded at Mill Falls in 2016 was 23.4 cm. The catch per unit effort was 2.1 and the largest trout caught on June 10th measured 36.0 cm. The best evening was June 7th. 16.1% of the trout were 4+ and older (6/5+ and 11/4+).
A comparable year when over 100 trout were caught would be 2005; 147 trout, CPUE 2.0, average length 23.9 cm, 12.8% older trout. Upon checking the Summary of Vital Statistics Mill Falls 1976 - 2016 recorded elsewhere in this report, you will note the absence of older trout in some years and a dramatic increase of older trout in others. To give a bit of insight on these fluctuations, I’ll quote Fish & Wildlife Biologist, Gary Corbett, writing in The Brook Trout of Mill Falls.
“Trout and most other fish species have years when the recruitment of young into the population is vastly better than other years. This is due to a variety of aquatic conditions called limiting factors that determine the survival of fish, eggs and fry. Water temperatures, levels, winter ice conditions, predators and other things take a big toll on the young.. When conditions are favorable, productivity can be high with a large crop of one year old trout entering the population. This strong year class as it is called can be tracked through it’s life span of five years
The Mill Falls data clearly show these strong year classes. Starting in 1977 the percentage of 4 year and older trout was 31.5%. This declined slowly to 13% by 1981 but good spawning success must have occurred in 1979 and 1980 because the percentage of older trout was back up to 43% and 33% in 1983 ans 1984. These up and down trends are evident between 1986 and 1990; 1991 and 1995 with a very good example showing up between 2004 and 2007.
What is the meaning of this to the average angler? Anglers should not be alarmed when they observe a couple of years of poor fishing where they are catching few large trout and mostly small trout.. This is simply a natural cycle of boom and bust trout numbers and in a few years the big trout will be abundant again. Anglers should also take note that if they are catching a lot of young trout, this demonstrates that a strong year class is coming along and in a couple of years this will show up as more abundant large trout.
The most important observation in this study, however, is the value of long term datasets. If a five year long study begins when a strong year class is in year five, and the fish are at the end of their life cycle, a decline in older fish will be observed during the next four years of study. If the study stops there, and those analyzing the data are lacking in a knowledge of fish biology and think there is a problem, an inappropriate management action may be taken. It is very important to study the population dynamics for a longer period than the life cycle of the species under study.”
(See: The Brook Trout of Mill Falls, Baird 2008, for further information from Fish & Wildlife Biologist, Gary Corbett, on the study of brook trout population dynamics).
No gill or fin lice infestations were noted in any of the 106 brook trout recorded at Mill Falls in the spring of 2016.
As has been noted before, the brook trout passing through Mill Falls are relatively free of gill and fin lice. Although not actually confirmed by existing data, it is possible the turbulent, highly oxygenated water of Mill Falls is a contributing factor. Old guides lore tends to support this theory.
Of the 22 brook trout where sex was readily determinable all were females.
This high ratio of females to males (100%) has been documented before. 80% in 2001, 80% in 2002, 83% in 2005, 89% in 2011, 90% in 2012 and 87% in 2015 and would indicate female brook trout stay on the spring feeding grounds as long as possible in order to maximize fat gain for egg production before migrating to their summer sites.
.
The average length of 137 brook trout tagged at Peskowesk Brook in the spring of 2016 was 22.9 cm and the average weight was 190 grams.
These averages are down a bit as compared to 2015 (129 trout, 25.6cm average length and 241 grams average weight) 2014 (120 trout, 24.8 cm average length and 254 grams average weight) 2013 (103 trout, 24.9 cm average length and 236 grams average weight), 2012 (112 trout, 24.1cm average length and 232 grams average weight), 2011 (119 trout, 24.6 cm average length and 238 grams average weight), 2010 (112 trout , 24.2 cm average length and 233 grams average weight). and 2002 (89 trout, average length 24.2 cm and average weight 236 grams).
Five different trout were caught a total of three times during the 2016 study time at Peskowesk Brook. #P93 grew 2.5 cm and gained 150 grams from October 2015 to May 2016. #H56 another 6+ male brook trout was documented on May 2, 2016.
The average length of 105 brook trout captured at Peskowesk Brook in the fall of 2016 was 27.1 cm and the average weight was 254 grams
Following the extreme low water conditions over summer, there were concerns for the fall spawning run, however, the numbers of spawning trout were the highest ever recorded.
A high number of recaptures again this year allowed for the collection of more very interesting growth and travel data.
See Brook Trout Recaptures 2016 elsewhere in this publication for all these interesting details.
One brook trout tagged (#K21) at Rogers Brook in the fall of 2015 had dispersed and was recaptured twice at the Black Rattle in May of 2016. Another trout #M15 tagged at Rogers Brook in the fall of 2015 was recaptured at the Eel Weir in April of 2016.
Previous dispersal records:
#E71 tagged at Rogers Brook September 15, 2014 was recaptured June 9, 2015 at the Eel Weir
#2174 tagged at Rogers Brook September 13, 2013 was recaptured at Little River May 3, 2014 and #2183 was tagged September 10, 2013 at Rogers Brook and recaptured May 16, 2014 off Jim Charles Point

Three brook trout tagged at Rogers Brook in the Fall of 2011 had dispersed and were recaptured in other Park locations in the Spring of 2012. #Q34 tagged October 24, 2011 at Rogers Brook was recaptured on April 2, 2012 below the J Line on the Mersey River. #Q35 tagged October 24, 2011 at Rogers Brook was recaptured near Dark Island in Keji Lake on May 13, 2012. #Y68 tagged September 30, 2011 at Rogers Brook was recaptured April 27, 2012 above the Eel Weir bridge.
A brook trout tagged at Rogers Brook on October 8, 2010 (#R37)was recaptured on May 15, 2011 in the Lake Run at Peskowesk Brook. The travel distance of 26 km is the furthest dispersal from Rogers Brook recorded to date. The fact that Peskowesk Brook is considered to be one of the best brook trout fisheries on the park makes this record somewhat significant as it verified the dispersal of young brook trout (2+) from Rogers Brook to every major brook trout fishery within the park.
Another brook trout tagged September 14, 2010 at Rogers Brook was caught and killed off Norway Island on May 16, 2011.
Six brook trout tagged at Rogers Brook in the fall of 2009 made significant movements as well. Two to the Little River System which is another highly rated brook trout fishery, one to Eastern Run, a noted fishery and three to the Eel Weir which is considered by many to be the best brook trout fishery on the park
Another brook trout tagged September 21, 2008 at Rogers Brook was recaptured above the Eel Weir bridge on April 24, 2009.
Four brook trout tagged in the fall of 2004 at Rogers Brook showed up in other areas of the park also. #J02 was tagged on October 28, 2004 and recaptured off Indian Point on June 10, 2005. #J25 was tagged October 29, 2004 and recaptured at Rocky Falls on Little River on April 28, 2005. #J42 was tagged on November 4, 2004 and recaptured in the Mersey River on June 1, 2005. #J49 was tagged Nov 4, 2004 and was recaptured at Eastern Run on May 11, 2005.
Radioed Trout #9 a 26 cm spawning male trout was captured, implanted with a radio transmitter and released in Rogers Brook in November of 2005. This fish left Rogers Brook shortly after release and spent the winter and spring of 2006 in Jeremy Bay near the mouth of Heber Meadow Brook. Spent the month of July in Keji Lake near Norway Island and in August moved back into Jeremy Bay and stayed until the transmitter failed on October 12th .
#1695 was recaptured October 25, 2013 at Rogers Brook measuring 29.7 cm and weighing 350 grams. It was tagged May 10, 2013 at Little River when it measured 27.0 cm and weighed 360 grams.
The record of brook trout #1695 documents a spawning migration of 14 km to Rogers Brook. As data continues to accumulate it becomes even more apparent numerous park brook trout spawn in Rogers Brook every fall with indications some of them come from long distances to do so. It would appear brook trout spawning success at Rogers Brook has a significant impact on park brook trout populations. Therefore monitoring and preserving the ecological integrity of Rogers Brook should be foremost in future fish management plans.
The numbers of brook trout recorded at Rogers Brook in the fall of 2016 showed a sharp decline. The extremely high water temperatures and low water conditions over the summer may have been a contributing factor, but nevertheless, an event has taken place at Rogers Brook. As to whether it is natural or not remains to be seen.

RECORDED
BROOK TROUT MOVEMENTS in UPPER MERSEY RIVER SYSTEM
1999 - 2009
Since 1999 more than 2000 brook trout have been gill tagged (monel metal tags attached to the operculum) from the waters of Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site. The information gathered from the recapture of tagged trout has enabled researchers to evaluate No-Kill Trout Sportfishing (Peskowesk Brook), Brook Trout Spawning Numbers (Peskowesk Brook and Rogers Brook), augment a Creel Census (Eel Weir), supplement a Brook Trout Telemetry Study (Mill Falls along with providing a data base of brook trout movements and growth.
The following are records of brook trout movements taken from this data base.

RELEVANT TELEMETRY REPORT DATA
Personal Observations Italicized
Movements
Daily brook trout movement patterns changed seasonally and varied from 100 meters to 13 km over a 24 hour period.
From our observations it would appear brook trout travel little, if any, in the hours of darkness.
Daily travel distances of 4 km to 9 km were not uncommon. Also documented a 11 km movement in 21 hours (trout # 14) and a 6.5 km movement in 5.5 hours (trout # 15).
In the spring as early as April they began moving around the lake or into streams: some individuals made long distance journeys of up to 11 km in three days. (Trout # 2). By the first of May most trout where feeding in riffles and runs in the rivers or along the shore of the lake.
When water temperature approached 20C, they moved quickly to deeper water in the lake or to ground water springs in the rivers covering as much as 13 km in one day. (Trout # 7)
Trout # 2 and trout # 15 both traveled 15 km or more up Little River to find summer refuge, however, we can only verify it happened within a week but in all probability was within a couple of days.
Trout # 2 moved out of Keji Lake and up West River in the early spring of 2006
Trout # 3 moved out of Keji Lake and up West River at the end of June (2005) and apparently by choice, settled in the Stump Pool (known summer refuge) for the summer and early fall.
Trout # 12 on the other hand, didn’t move into the Stump Pool on West River until the middle of August (2006). This move apparently necessitated by the lack of oxygen in the Keji Lake thermocline.
This same lack of oxygen may have prompted trout # 10 and trout #14 to move up the Mersey River 38 km and 25 km respectively to find summer refuge
Trout moved as much as 15 km to spawning areas in the rivers during the fall.
Trout # 4 and trout # 7 both came up the Mersey River in October with the river a raging torrent.
Trout # 4 came up river 10 km to Mill Falls from the 12th to 16th of October. Rested four days below the falls, ascended the falls sometime after 11am on the 20th and was at the mouth of Baxter’s Meadow Brook on the 21st .
Trout # 7 moved up river 8 km on the 11th , ascended Mill Falls and moved another 3 km up river on the 12th and was up river another 2 km on the 14th .
Dates and distances of movements to wintering sites.
Trout # 4 was gone from Baxter’s Brook on November 18th and was located back in Keji Lake in the southern cove of Big Muise Island on the 19th - a distance of 17 km.
Trout # 7 was 2 km above Maitland Bridge on November 11th . On November 13th it was on the west side of Indian Point some 15 km from the November 11th location. On the 15th was 2.5 km to the north in Atkin’s Meadow Brook and on the 19th was in Minards Bay (where it spent the winter) 7 km to the south. A known travel distance of 24.5 km since spawning.
Additional travel data.
Six of the radioed fish traveled up the Mersey River out of the park to the north. Trout # 1, # 6, #10 and # 14 apparently seeking summer and fall refuge while the movements of trout # 4 and # 7 would indicate the spawning run.
Two gill-tagged brook trout were recaptured in the Mersey River north of the park as well. # 716 was 8 km and # F63 was 13 km above the release site at time of recapture.
Three of the radioed fish journeyed to Little River. Trout # 2 and # 15 to spend the summer and fall while trout # 4 visited the Stag Neck Pool for two weeks before heading up the Mersey River to spawn.
Gill-tag recapture records also point to a definite link between Little River (Still Brook) and Mill Falls. Trout # 524 tagged May 22, 2003 at Mill Falls was recaptured May 10, 2004 at Big Dam Lake. Trout # K68 tagged May 11, 2005 at Still Brook was recaptured 36 days later (June 16, 2005) at Mill Falls (GIS analysis 27 km). Trout # 901 tagged May 8, 2008 at Still Brook was recaptured May 28, 2009 at Mill Falls (GIS analysis 27 km).
Four of the radioed fish spent time in Minards Bay. Trout # 3 spent less than a week in the fall of 2005 and trout # 18 spent some time in early spring 2007. Trout # 7 spent the winter of 2005/2006 in Minards Bay and succumbed to otter predation there in May 2006. Trout # 19 spent the winter of 2006/2007 in Minards Bay and also succumbed to otter predation there in early spring 2007.
A five year old brook trout gill-tagged (# 331) October 7, 2002 above Mill Falls was recaptured June 9, 2003 in Minards Bay.
Four of the radioed trout spent time in the vicinity of Dark and Freeman Islands. Trout # 3, Trout # 18 and Trout # 21 spent a considerable amount of time there through late fall into spring. Trout # 12 also spent some time there in late fall 2006.
It is interesting to note that six of the radioed fish; trout # 2, trout # 3, trout # 4, trout # 12, trout #19 and trout # 21 all visited a location near Haystack Rock for a short period of time in their travels.
Trout # 12 also spent a week in Loon Lake in December 2006.
Trout # 14 at one time was approximately 15 km above the Mill Falls release site and was recaptured 20 km below the release site.
Two of the radioed trout #10 and #22 spent time in Grafton Lake. #10 spent three weeks in May/June of 2006 and #22 spent the winter of 2006/2007.
Numerous brook trout gill tagged at Peskowesk Brook in the month of May were recaptured in subsequent years from the same section of brook in which they were tagged. #PB10 and #984 were recaptured three years concurrently (see Brook Trout Growth section). Knowing from water chemistry analysis that Peskowesk Brook is not a summer refuge for brook trout this annual return would appear to be a feeding migration.
Another record of homing to feeding locations is gill tagged Trout # 286. Tagged May 17, 2003 above the Eel Weir bridge. Recaptured April 29, 2004 at Channel Lake 12.5 km away. Recaptured May 19, 2004 above the Eel Weir bridge from the exact same feeding lie where it had been caught and tagged 367 days earlier.
The table on the following page lists water temperatures and water levels from the Mill Falls monitoring site on the Mersey River April thru October for the years 2005, 2006 and 2007. It is interesting to note the higher water levels of October 2005 and June/July 2006 didn’t appear to have any significant influence on water temperature averages.

BROOK TROUT GROWTH RECORDS
2000 - 2009
Kejimkujik National Park & National Historic Site
During the brook trout population study in the Fly Fishing Only, Catch and Release Area of Peskowesk Brook, numerous brook trout were captured more than once. These recaptures, having all been previously tagged with monel metat tags attached to the operculum, were readily identifiable.
Previous studies done under controlled laboratory conditions, have shown that brook trout will consume as much as 50% of their body weight and gain as much as 16% of their initial body weight per week when water temperature is 13c and food is readily available.
The number of same year recaptures showing up on Peskowesk Brook presented an opportunity for the author to collect growth data under natural conditions. The initial results were so interesting that growth information was recorded whenever possible in successive studies.
The trout were all measured (fork length) in the newly designed Baird and Corbett measuring tubes (pictured elsewhere in this report). These tubes enable technicians to get fast and accurate measurements without causing any undue stress or injury to fish.
All recaptures were re-measured and where possible, re-weighed regardless of the time frame since last capture resulting in 211 valid* growth records to date.
* Note: Recaptures not measured by the author are recorded as"angler measured" in this report. Although all "angler measured" recaptures recorded were double checked for authenticity, it was with the full realization that most anglers measure total length rather than fork length and a quick measurement is definitely not as accurate as the measuring tubes.
Available data would indicate brook trout start foraging for food shortly after ice-out and compile their most growth early in the season. It also appears an increase in length precedes a gain in weight.

Age statistics show park brook trout grow an average of 6.3 cm between their first and second years, 4.0 cm between their second and third years, 3.7 cm between their third and four years, 4.4 cm between their four and fifth years, and should they live, 2.5 cm between their fifth and sixth years. In years when sustained spring water levels extend this ravenous brook trout feeding period, growth records indicate trout of all ages take full advantage of this opportunity and growth will exceed the yearly average. The reverse is true for lean years.

Data from brook trout at Peskowesk Brook over a six year periodhow a fairly consistentpattern of age to weight to length pattern. The older the fish the higher the ratio of unit weight tounit length. Conversely, the younger the fish the lower the ratio of unit weight to unit length.
Using millimeters as the unit length and grams as the unit weight, the 6+ trout from Peskowesk Brook average 1.8 grams for every millimeter of length, while the 1+ fish average less than .5 grams per millimeter of length. The averages for the other age groups are as follows:
5+ fish: 1.65 grams per mm
4+ fish: 1.25 grams per mm
3+ fish .94 grams per mm
2+ fish .63 grams per mm
The unit weight to unit length ratio data from 1540 brook trout records between 1994 and 2004 in Kejimkujik National Park and Nation Historic site show this Peskowesk formula to be fairly consistent with all upper Mersey River trout. Thus it can be used to determine age and/or weight and be considered reasonably accurate when only the length of the fish is known. This age versus length relationship is the most accurate during the month of September. There are certainly cases of overlap in the month of May where a 3+ fish, for example, will be close to the average length of a 4+ fish. In such cases the grams per mm ratio will be the determining factor. From all appearances 3+ Brook trout in the Upper Mersey River System do not reach the grams per mm ratio of 4+ fish during their third year.
The following table shows average length, weight and grams per millimeter for each age class of Upper Mersey River Watershed brook trout. It will be noted that the four and five year age classes of Peskowesk Brook trout have a slightly higher grams per mm ratio than the over all average.
